ECI Announces Assembly Election Dates for Five States; Voting to Begin in April
India Assembly Election Dates 2026: India’s Election Commission of India on Sunday announced the schedule for the 2026 legislative assembly elections in five states and union territories, setting the stage for one of the most significant electoral exercises of the year. The elections will be held in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and the union territory of Puducherry.
The announcement was made during a press conference in New Delhi by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Soon after the declaration of the poll schedule, the Model Code of Conduct came into effect in the respective states, restricting governments from announcing new policies or projects that could influence voters.

According to the Election Commission, polling will begin in early April and will continue through the month. Assam, Kerala and Puducherry will vote on April 9. Tamil Nadu will go to the polls on April 23, while West Bengal will have a two-phase election with voting scheduled for April 23 and April 29. Counting of votes for all five regions will take place on May 4.
Officials said that the elections will involve more than 170 million registered voters, making it one of the largest multi-state electoral exercises in recent years. Millions of election officials and security personnel will be deployed to ensure smooth and secure polling across thousands of polling stations.

During the press conference, the Chief Election Commissioner emphasized that the commission is committed to ensuring free, fair and transparent elections. He said the Election Commission has taken extensive measures to strengthen monitoring mechanisms to prevent the misuse of money, intimidation of voters, or violations of election rules.
“We are fully prepared to conduct peaceful and credible elections. Strict action will be taken against any attempt to influence voters illegally,” Kumar said while addressing the media.
The Commission also highlighted that special attention will be given to sensitive polling stations, especially in areas that have previously experienced election-related tensions. Additional security arrangements and surveillance will be implemented where necessary.
Role of EVM and VVPAT in the 2026 Assembly Elections
Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) equipped with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) systems will be used in all constituencies to ensure transparency and voter confidence in the electoral process.
Political Parties Begin Campaign Preparations
Political parties across the country have already begun preparations for the upcoming elections, which are expected to witness intense campaigning over the next several weeks. The elections in these states are likely to draw national attention, as the outcomes could have implications for the broader political landscape ahead of future national contests.
Analysts believe that the political dynamics in each state vary considerably, with regional issues playing a significant role in shaping voter preferences. While some states may witness direct contests between major national parties, others could see multi-cornered fights involving regional parties.
